Would the iPhone rule the world if Apple broke AT&T exclusivity?

The Apple iPhone took the smartphone world by storm 3 years ago, but seems to have hit a stagnant point as the device is only available on a single US wireless carrier. This exclusivity is seen in only one out of the six major smartphone platforms. Is it time for Apple to add more carriers?

Cellphone Swipe Cards

You only have to watch people in a fast food restaurant to see they’re more attached to their mobile phones than their own arteries, carefully protecting cellular babies from even a spot of the grease they’re pumping into suffering bodies. New technology plans to put this power to good use, routing more routine tasks like hotel check-ins through your phone.
Instead of arriving at the front desk to confirm that you’ve already done all your booking online, meaning you still have to wait behind a queue of fourteen confused English-as-a-fourteenth-language guests ahead of you, the idea is that your phone can be…

While the OS is certainly worthy of our sarcasm, the spec sheet isn’t. The Fathom is run by Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor and has a 3.2″ touchscreen, a microSD card expansion slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a…

Nokia Strike a Deal With Yahoo!

Nokia and web search giant Yahoo! have stood up in front of the world’s press and vowed to bring ‘integrated web services’ to millions of people worldwide. Aw, how sweet. Wedding analogies aside, for two companies who have had their fair share of problems and bad press recently, this is a big announcement for both and, for Yahoo! anyway, one in the eye for Google.
The collaboration goes deeper than a simple advertising partnership or similar, as Nokia will be providing all of Yahoo!’s mapping and navigation services, which will be branded ‘Powered by Ovi’ and in return, Yahoo! will handle Nokia’s…

We had such high hopes for the T-Mobile HTC HD2, but the device suffers from major stability issues and the update that was designed to fix some of these has now been pulled. T-Mobile is apparently working to fix the update and release it again, but that doesn’t help those with devices locking up.

Blackberry Binmen

Binmen are bringing Blackberrys to the high-stakes game of collecting garbage, proving that there isn’t a single job in the world where you don’t have to work with computers.  The garbage collection agency “Biffa” is electronically equipping employees in an effort to speed up the service.  They say staff can now communicated with home office and download maps, which raises the terrifying idea of trucks brimming with garbage tearing around at random in an extremely unpleasant version of Speed.
More usefully they’ll be able to instantly image examples of customers with overflowing bins or improperly-sorted garbage, so reality has finally caught…
