Samsung Craft Is A 4G LTE-Enabled Phone For MetroPCS

MetroPCS just launched their LTE (Long-Term Evolution) 4G infrastructure in Vegas.  While doing that, they also announced the first phone to take advantage of that brand new high-speed data network, the Samsung Craft.
In a surprising twist, the world’s first commercially-available 4G LTE-enabled, multi-mode, CDMA handset isn’t even a full-fledged smartphone.  Instead, it’s a feature phone featuring TouchWiz UI at the helm, with a specs list that doesn’t really offer much to be impressed with.
Details of the Craft include a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen, a slide-out horizontal QWERTY keyboard, a  3.2 megapixel camera with flash, a full suite of connectivity options (aside from 4G, it has WiFi and Bluetooth) and microSD card expansion (with 2GB preloaded, expandable to 32GB).  No details on what applications come preinstalled – given the 4G LTE speeds, though, we’re assuming plenty of streaming services, along [...]

That was quick: New CEO In, N8 Shipments Delayed

Here’s two Nokia fun facts for today: former Microsoft Business Division president Stephen Elop started his new job yesterday as Nokia CEO, while long-awaited N8 shipments have been delayed “a few weeks.” Coincidence? I think not! According to Nokia Conversations, the Official Nokia Blog (not to be confused with this one), customers who pre-ordered will [...]

Pantech Jest Brings Cute Design, Along With Messaging And Social Savvy

The Pantech Jest is the latest in the line of the company’s quirky-looking messaging phones.   While there’s likely nothing here you haven’t seen before, it does bundle the range of features today’s social networking-obsessed young crowd typically look for in their handsets.
Physically, it looks pudgy.  Pantech did manage to make it reasonably slim at 0.6-inch thick, despite the presence of a vertically-sliding QWERTY keypad.  It has a good fit in hand and allows a firm grip with its textured back.  Display is a small 2.6-inch panel (320 x 320), with gorgeous colors and excellent detail.  Navigational array sits right under the screen – it’s decent, although the optical direction pad could have been more responsive.  The QWERTY keypad is a bit cramped, but usable.
As a phone, the Pantech Jest made for mixed call quality.  Voices came through load and relatively clear, although there’s a notable harshness to the sound.  Those [...]

RIM Blackberry Curve 3G 9300: A Slightly Better 8520

The RIM Blackberry Curve 3G 9300 is the direct successor of the Curve 8520.  Successor might be too strong a word here, since they’re identical in many ways, save for a few added capabilities.
Physically, it takes on the classic Blackberry shape – a QWERTY candybar with a nice grip and a good weight in hand.   It’s very similar to the 8520, with a few design tweaks, such as an improved optical trackpad, dividers for the navigation buttons and texturized rubber back.  The 2.4-inch display is clear and sharp, while the QWERTY keyboard proved excellent for extended typing.
As a phone, the Curve 3G 9300 makes for very impressive call quality on both ends of the line, coming as close to landline quality as you can ask for.    Speakerphone was also excellent, almost being as good as regular calls.  Battery is rated at 4.5 hours of talk time, which should net you [...]
